BNP leaders and activists have handed over a leader expelled from the Jubo Dal to the police on charges of extortion in Sripur, Gazipur. He was arrested from the Brindavan area of Sripur around 12 noon today, Wednesday.

The man’s name is Jahangir Alam (35). He is the son of Nurul Islam of Mulaid village in Sripur. He was a member of the convening committee of the Sripur Upazila Jubo Dal. He was expelled from the party on February 22 on charges of violating party discipline.
Some local and BNP party sources said that on February 22, Jahangir Alam tried to occupy MC Bazar along the Dhaka-Mymensingh road in Sripur with his armed forces. At that time, everyone including him and his supporters covered their faces with towels and each had country-made weapons in their hands. They raised their weapons in MC Bazar and the surrounding areas and ordered traders to pay extortion. The video of the incident then went viral on Facebook and YouTube. Later, Jahangir Alam was given a notice to be expelled from the party. On February 25, a case was filed against him at Sreepur Police Station. In this regard, Sreepur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Abdul Barik said, “Jahangir is an accused in two cases filed on February 25. In one of them, he is on bail. He has been arrested as a fugitive accused in the other case. In addition, we have found out after searching that he is an accused in a total of seven cases. After his arrest, he was sent to jail through the court.”
Meanwhile, BNP National Executive Committee Joint Health Secretary SM Rafiqul Islam, describing Jahangir Alam as a known terrorist and gunman in the area, said, “Jahangir was again returning to the area and engaging in criminal activities. We arrested him and handed him over to the police after receiving information.”
